After working in the fast food industry for two years, Loria was ready for a career change. She applied and was hired for the manager position at Goodwill.
“The longer I work here, the more I learn about how Goodwill uses its mission to help the community and its employees,” Loria said. “We bring in a lot of people who have challenges, and Goodwill is willing to give them a chance.”
Lois and Sandy are just two of Loria’s employee who have benefitted from Goodwill’s programs and services.
Eleven years ago, Lois was hired at Goodwill as a part-time employee and has worked her way up to assistant manager. Upon being hired, Louis enrolled in Goodwill’s community employment program, where she works one-on-one with counselor Tephanie Green to set and achieve goals, specifically regarding communication with co-workers and customers.
“I’ve been given opportunities to learn new skills, and I’ve grown a lot,” Lois said. “I’m happy to work here because I’m close with all my co-workers; we are like a family.”
One of those co-workers is Sandy, who has been working part-time at Goodwill for four years.
“I didn’t realize all the programs Goodwill offered to people who have disabilities,” Sandy said. “I was receiving disability benefits, and I was just sitting at home, doing nothing. When I was hired at Goodwill, I was given the opportunity to earn additional income while staying busy and active.”
Sandy also works with Tephanie through the community employment program. Together, they have worked on Sandy’s health issues, including scheduling eye surgery so she would have the opportunity to work more hours. Since then, she has met her goal of being promoted to production clerk II.
“Loria is the best manager I’ve ever had,” Sandy said. “She’s so compassionate and really puts herself in our shoes. She acts like she’s known us forever, even though she hasn’t. She is so understanding of our unique situations.”
Loria replied, “That’s just what I’m supposed to do. Lois and Sandy are both devoted to their jobs, and I am here to encourage them. Because they’re making progress and becoming independent, Tephanie’s services aren’t quite as in-demand as they once were. My favorite part of working at Goodwill is seeing employees face challenges and overcome them.”
