I was recently asked by one of Goodwill’s regional managers if we could promote the Somerset store on our Facebook page. She explained that the staff has been hard at work improving the store to enhance customer experience. I said I’d be happy to stop by and take some photos of the new store layout.
As soon as I walked in, an employee began waving emphatically at me. I assumed I must have met this employee previously, but he didn’t look familiar. He walked over to me and said, “Hi, my name is Matt.” I was relieved that he introduced himself, confirming that we had not met previously. I replied, “Hi, I’m Lauren. I’m from the administrative office.”
He excitedly exclaimed, “I JUST cleaned the bathrooms. I have never cleaned the bathrooms before, but they look amazing!”
I chuckled and wanted to explain that I was not there to “check up” on anything. I thought he was putting on an “impress-corporate-attitude.” Boy, was I wrong.
Before I had a chance to explain why I was there, Matt just kept talking. “I’ve been at Goodwill for three years. This job has been a hero to me. I just love it. I love everything about it. I love my coworkers. I love being part of a team. I love customers. I love when families come in. I love treating others the way I would want to be treated. I love the manual labor. I love lifting bags of donations. I don’t want to brag, but I can lift a 100-pound bag with ease.”
I left the Somerset store feeling like a million bucks. I have never met a human with so much enthusiasm for his job, for his life. Keep shining bright, Matt. Keep shining bright.
